The work of Daniel Goleman http://www.danielgoleman.info/ on emotional intelligence and his contribution to CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) has been instrumental in creating a greater appreciation of the value of activities that develop social and emotional Learning.
Emotional intelligence is defined as:-
the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
CASEL defines Social and emotional learning http://www.casel.org/social-and-emotional-learning as follows:-
Social and emotional learning (SEL) involves the processes through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
The core skills which are the outcome of Social and Emotional Learning, often termed Social Literacy may be represented as:-:
Self-awareness; self-mangement; social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making.
The significant value of the Curriculum of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy is that it provides a drama context allowing a natural acquisition of social skills in a non-competitive, participatory enjoyable activity without any specific focus on soft skills development, resilience training or stimulation of leadership qualities.
Of particular relevance is the knowledge that the Academy began introducing children to the development of these skills even as Goleman was researching the topic.
A strong testament to the enduring values of joining the Helen O’Grady community is the enrolment of students who are the children of past students.
